“Silvertip” is a grizzly bear in Yellowstone National Park. He’s big and scary—some of the time. He’s playful and brave – some of the time. And he’s almost always hungry. In other words, Silvertip is a typical male grizzly bear, and this book shows you how he lives through a year in Yellowstone National Park. You’ll learn about what he eats, where he goes, and how he gets along with wolves, other bears, and even park visitors like you.

“Silvertip” teaches kids about Yellowstone’s grizzlies

Children will learn a lot about grizzly bears in a colorful new book called “Silvertip: A Year in the Life of a Yellowstone Grizzly.”

The large-format picture book uses vivid artwork and concise text to accurately describe how a grizzly bear lives in Yellowstone National Park.

“Silvertip” is the name of an eight-year-old male grizzly. The book starts with Silvertip emerging from his den in the spring. As the seasons progress, Silvertip describes the foods he eats and the other animals he encounters, including Yellowstone’s wolves. Silvertip also faces a nemesis in an older, larger grizzly that keeps taking Silvertip’s food until the bears have a climatic battle over an elk carcass.

The fast-paced, entertaining book provides a true picture of Yellowstone’s grizzly bears and their ecology. It will appeal to young readers and to parents who like to read to their children.

“Silvertip” is written and illustrated by Ted Rechlin, a young professional artist in Bozeman, Montana, who spends much of his free time exploring Yellowstone National Park.

The book sells for $9.95 and is available at bookstores and Riverbend Publishing.
